In a nutshell, Shooting Roots is an organisation run by and for young people, offering folk workshops and other fun participatory events for young people at festivals. It's about building scenes, developing friendships and creating access points to folk arts.

Shooting Roots until very recently, has been part of FolkArts England. More details about us (especially if you're a festival wanting to know how you get SR at your festival) and all the good work FAE does on the FAE website here.

We'll next be in touch sometime in September, when we've finished drying the tents and catching up on sleep after this year's excellent festival fun!

Here's what's coming up at Shooting Roots for the rest of Summer 2006:

Broadstairs Folk Week - 12-19th August 2006

Shooting Roots is back at Broadstairs with another exciting choice of hands -on workshops run by and for young people. Workshops happen every day from Sunday to Thursday, and are led by the friendly, talented, and occasionally silly Shooting Roots tutors. Alongside meeting new friends, learning new skills and developing your folk interests, you’ll be preparing some great performances ready for Friday’s Showcase!

Band Workshop , Beginner’s Music Workshop; Sounds of Song; and Street Theatre Workshop are open to everyone aged between 12 and 25. For music workshops you need to bring your instrument, for all others, just bring yourself! Please see the festival's webiste for more details.

Towersey Village Festival 24th - 28th August 2006

Shooting Roots Towersey 2006! And what a year it is going to be! Shooting Roots workshops are for everyone aged 12-25 and they are a chance to have fun, meet loads of other great young people, and get stuck into an assortment of brilliant folky things from dancing Morris to playing for ceilidhs. This year is unique because instead of the workshops leading to a showcase as normal, they will be leading to a fantastic event; a grand retelling of the ballad of Jack Rowland, Shooting Roots style. Jack Who? Never mind - turn up and find out! In a nutshell; a cool story with wizards, strange kings, talking horses and singing spiders is about to get a great new soundtrack, moving human scenery, hilarious commentary and much more… There’s also a number of ceilidhs and other events – keep your eye on the programme!
